ACACIA WOOD and the ARK OF THE COVENANT STORY
In the book of Exodus, the Bible identifies the wood used in the Tabernacle as shittâh which translates as acacia. Acacia wood was the only type of wood used in the construction of the Tent of Meeting, the furniture, the altars and the Ark of the Covenant, the most sacred piece of furniture in the whole tabernacle structure found in the Holy of Holies. “And Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood; ... And he overlaid it with pure gold inside and outside, and made a rim of gold around it. (Exodus 37:1-2). From a practical standpoint, acacia trees would have been one of the only types of trees growing in the wilderness regions traveled by Israel. In addition, acacia wood is dense, extremely strong and resistant to decay, resulting in materials that endured for a long time. Some Bible scholars have suggested that the Ark of the Covenant is a picture of Messiah Yeshua, (Jesus Christ), that the Acacia wood speaks of the His indestructible humanity and that the gold speaks of His Kingship.
